PFAS – The Past, Present, and Where Do We Go Next?

Thursday, May 23, 2024

The Illinois Association of Environmental Professionals (IAEP) welcomes Jonathan (Jon) Thorn and AnnieLu Dewitt to our 2024 educational spring
networking and educational series.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) constitute a large family of fluorinated chemicals, exceeding several thousand that might be in commercial use or the environment, that vary widely in their chemical and physical properties. The number of PFAS and their uses have expanded over the years. PFAS are a broad class of over 6,000 compounds that have been widely used in industrial and consumer applications since the 1940s. For example, PFAS have been used for coating fabrics and textiles, in non-stick surfaces, in some firefighting foams, some paints, polishes, and waxes, and electronic devices. Certain PFAS have been detected ubiquitously in the environment.

SPEAKERS:

Jon Thorn, Technical Leader, PFAS Practice Leader with Eurofins Environment Testing America will provides updates on regulatory actions at both the federal and state level in addressing PFAS contamination. Jon will provide highlights on notable and lesser-known regulatory actions targeting PFAS, the state of science on PFAS research topics, and latest news on PFAS analytical methods.

AnnieLu Dewitt, is the National Technical and Sales Lead for the Emerging Contaminant and Water Treatment Program for the Clean Harbors Environmental Services Group.   AnnieLu will provide updates on PFAS Removal and Treatment services including incineration of Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF), solidification and landfilling, and treatment of Industrial and Municipal WWTPs.

Guest Speakers

Jon Thorn, Technical Leader, PFAS Practice Leader for Eurofins Environment Testing

Jonathan (Jon) Thorn is the Technical Director for Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories Environment Testing. Jon has worked in the field of environmental analytical chemistry for over 28 years. For the last eight years, his primary focus has been the analysis of PFAS in environmental samples, focusing on development and implementation of analytical methods in difficult matrices, including ground water, wastewater, landfill leachate, sediment, soil, biosolids, environmental tissues, agricultural products, and animal blood. Prior to PFAS, Jon’s primary focus was hydrocarbon forensics, focusing on PAH, alkylated PAH, and petroleum biomarkers. He received his B.S. in chemistry from Bridgewater State University in 1996.

AnnieLu Dewitt, National Technical Lead Remediation Services, Clean Harbors

AnnieLu DeWitt is the National Technical and Sales Lead for the Emerging Contaminant and Water Treatment Program for the Clean Harbors Environmental Services group. AnnieLu brings her 25 years of experience in the environmental laboratory and remediation fields to Clean Harbors to assist clients in interpreting their analytical results to evaluate their options for treatment utilizing varied media and pre-treatment equipment to achieve project objectives. Having worked as a GC/MS and also most recently as an LC-MS/MS chemist for PFAS compounds she believes in the importance of evaluating the project as a whole, from suggesting the most valuable testing methods at the beginning of the project that help determine the best treatment trains and media for complex waste streams to informing clients on their options for final deposition of their spent media. AnnieLu DeWitt holds a BS in Chemistry-Geology from Bridgewater State University.
